How to Start a Florida Non-Profit. What Is a Nonprofit? Nonprofits typically serve a community in a religious, scientific, educational, or charitable capacity. They are legally defined by the IRS and by the states where they are incorporated. Know What Type of Nonprofit You Want to Start. The founder does not “own” the nonprofit as you would a for-profit business. Governing structures vary, but nonprofits often are led by a board of directors that is originally defined by the founder. While the founder can be a board member, the board does not serve the founder’s interests but does what is best for the organization. Be sure that your goals are in line with the nonprofit’s purpose.
