During my tenure as an Energy Advisor with an Energy Service Company, the organization underwent a planned downsizing as its five-year contract came to an end. As part of the transition support offered to impacted employees, the company provided access to outplacement services through Relevante, including professional career coaching, resume development, and job search assistance. I was paired with a Career Coach, who provided guidance and support focused on identifying employment opportunities aligned with my career goals, professional experience, and transferable skills. I was initially a little reluctant to commit to the services offered by Relevante because I was in a unique situation. After working full-time in the energy field for many years, I was at a point in my career where I could either retire or look for something part time. I wasn’t sure Relevante would be able to provide much assistance given where I was in my decision-making process. My opinion changed completely after I met virtually with my coach. I had tremendously underestimated the knowledge and expertise she made available to help guide me through this transition. The first step was updating my resume, which needed a complete refresh to better align with the AI tools many employers now use to screen applicants. She worked with me to revamp my entire resume, removing details that were no longer applicable and focusing more on the experience that complemented the type of employment I was seeking. She then helped me update my LinkedIn profile introduction, so it would quickly communicate who I am and the customers I have experience serving. She also helped me craft my LinkedIn “About” section to capture my industry knowledge, primary customer base, successes, and work history. In addition, she helped me identify the skills I have honed over 35 years in the energy industry. Since I was seeking part-time work, I recognized that pursuing the position I was interested in could present certain challenges. My coach encouraged me to consider alternative options, including consulting opportunities or establishing an LLC, which would allow me to negotiate contract-based arrangements with clients who may benefit from my energy advisory and auditing expertise. After several valuable virtual meetings with my coach, I am deeply grateful to both her and Relevante for the knowledge, guidance, and practical skills she shared.
