California’s newest protected characteristic: Intersectionality. What is it?

Content Summary

In a groundbreaking move, California has become the first jurisdiction to explicitly adopt the concept of intersectionality with the passage of SB 1137. This law protects the overlapping claims of discrimination under the state’s anti-discrimination laws. As defined within SB 1137, intersectionality refers to the "unique, interlocking forms of discrimination and harassment experienced by individuals in the workplace and throughout society, particularly Black women, in contrast to Black men and White women."
