It's back-to-school season.
New notebooks. Sharpened pencils. That first-day-of-something energy in the air.
And it's got me thinking about how much of how we lead… we actually learned in a classroom.
Raise your hand. Wait to be called on. Don't speak out of turn. Don't get it wrong in front of everyone. There's one right answer… and the teacher has it.

Some of that served us.
A lot of it… we just never questioned.
We carried it out of the classroom and straight into our careers. Into our meetings. Into the quiet rules we still follow without realizing we're following them.

I've been noticing this in myself.
How often I still wait to be "called on" before I say the thing. How much energy I spend making sure I won't look wrong. How rarely I let myself just… not know something yet.
Old rules. Still running the show.

So this season, I'm not asking, "What do I want to learn?"
I'm asking something a little different:
What do I want to unlearn?

Friday Self-Leadership Reflections:
1. The Rule You Still Follow
What's a "school rule" you're still living by that doesn't actually serve you anymore? Waiting to be called on. Needing the right answer before you speak. Staying inside the lines. No judgment. Just notice which one is yours.
2. Where "Looking Wrong" Runs the Show
Where does the old fear of getting it wrong in front of people still hold you back? Where do you over-prepare, stay quiet, or keep your hand down… when you actually have something to say?
3. Permission to Be a Beginner
Where could you let yourself be new at something again this fall? Not already good. Not already the expert. Just… willing to learn out loud. What's one place you could color a little outside the lines?

You don't have to unlearn all of it at once.
Just catch one old rule… And let yourself do it a little differently.
The teacher's not coming. You get to decide what the lesson is now.
