Press Release

The technological landscape is shifting rapidly, and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has taken a proactive step to ensure the American workforce is not left behind. On  March 24, 2026 , the DOL announced the launch of the  “Make America AI-Ready”  initiative. This program is designed to provide workers with foundational artificial intelligence (AI) literacy through a highly accessible, text-message-based course.

A Streamlined Approach to AI Literacy

Developed through a public-private partnership with education technology company Arist, the initiative aims to demystify AI for the general workforce. The course is structured for maximum accessibility, requiring no laptop or high-speed internet, only a mobile device capable of receiving text messages.

Key features of the course include:

  • Bite-Sized Learning.  Daily content and challenges delivered via text.
  • Time Commitment.  Designed to be completed in just seven days, with approximately 10 minutes of engagement per day.
  • Cost.  The program is entirely free for all participants.

The AI Literacy Framework

As noted in our prior post, the curriculum aligns with the DOL’s AI Literacy Framework and focuses on five core competency areas essential for today’s workforce:

  1. Understanding AI Principles.  Learning the core concepts, capabilities, and limitations of AI.
  2. Exploring AI Uses.  Identifying how AI tools can complement human expertise in various use cases.
  3. Directing AI Effectively.  Mastering the art of context and clear prompting to produce useful outputs.
  4. Evaluating AI Outputs.  Developing the skills to assess AI-generated results for relevance and accuracy.
  5. Using AI Responsibly.  Understanding ethical and secure AI usage, including data protection and accountability.

Next Steps for Employers

As AI continues to integrate into daily business operations, employers can leverage this federal resource to upskill their teams without significant overhead costs.

  • Promote Internal Awareness:  Distribute information about the “Make America AI-Ready” initiative to your employees. Individuals can enroll by texting  “READY”  to  20202 .
  • Integrate with Professional Development:  Consider incorporating this 7-day challenge into your existing training or professional development programs to establish a baseline of AI literacy across the organization.
  • Review AI Policies:  As employees become more “AI-ready,” ensure your internal policies regarding the use of generative AI and data security are up-to-date and clearly communicated.
  • Explore Advanced Training:  For staff in technical roles, use the additional resources provided at the end of the DOL course to identify paths for more advanced AI skill acquisition.
